Airpasses are essentially concessionary airfares offered
by airlines for visitors to a particular country or region. When a journey requires a
number of flights within a particular country or region, the airpass can be an
attractive option, particularly if flights will be long-distance.
In most cases an airpass must be booked before
departure form the country of origin, as it will not be available in the destination
itself. A minimum number of flights (or 'coupons' as they are usually referred to)
have to be pre-purchased. Typically, these are a minimum of two or three flights up
to a maximum of ten. It is worth remembering that the airpasses are only valid fro a
spcified number of days.
Airpasses can offer excellent value for money (when
your itinerary includes the minimum number of flights) as they permit a greater
degree of flexibility than most concessionary or discounted fares. Usually you can
change the dates of travel (and in some cases the route) at little of no extra cost,
whereas most other cheap or discounted airfares incur either penalties or do not
allow changes. However, they are not always the cheapest way of simply getting
from A to B.
Most IATA ravel agents can sell airpasses as long as
they are an accredited agent for the required airline. However, in the past few
years, now that airlines are offering fares that include multiple stopovers as part of
the main or international ticket, airpass sales have been dwindling, especially to
North America. WEXAS International, or any good travel agent, will be able to
advise which is the most suitable type of ticket for your particular journey.
While many of the airlines offer airpasses, no two are
exactly the same. Below we have listed a selection of the most popular airpasses,
but these are just a sample of what is available.
