| WEXAS funded expeditions
Since WEXAS was founded in 1970 the Club has played an active part in supporting some of the many expeditions leaving Britain each year. In 2002 WEXAS helped fund two expeditions: |
Project Anuran phase III, Belize The team aims to contribute to the understanding of the ecology and conservation of amphibian populations via intensive assessment of species status and community structure at the neo-tropical site of Las Cuevas - in furtherance of preliminary work conducted during Anuran Phase I and Phase II. The objectives are to: 1) monitor vocalising species status and community structure at a series of breeding ponds, representing a number of sub-habitats; 2) further assess non-vocalising species in areas of riparian habitat identified during Phase I and Phase II; 3) search for further evidence on the status and ecology of a species of unknown status collected during Phase I and Phase II; 4) conduct survey work to compare the diversity of population status of ground dwelling amphibian fauna at four sites in the Las Cuevas area, in order to assess the congruence of amphibian diversity with the presence/absence of four key umbrella species. |
Biosearch Nyika: Malawi 2001-2003 This expedition serves to continue the work carried out in the 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001 expeditions to Malawi. Particular emphasis was placed on accumulating more data on the status and conservation needs of the large mammals, plant and invertebrate diversity and river ecology. The team will use field techniques they have previously built up in cooperation with the Park staff and directly for the Parks management. The Parks authority requested that the expedition provide management data for: 1) the protection of the large mammal populations, 2) the conservation of biodiversity, 3) sustainable development, and 4) the continuation of existing research projects. The team also assessed the effect of burning on invertebrates; provided logistical support for Park scouts; assessed plant, bird and small mammal populations; and investigated the effect of poaching. The team will be working in the remote, trackless, wooded valleys, off the steep escarpments, where few people can venture. This is the most significant area for game and poaching activity and where the most useful work can be done. |
The Royal Geographical Society administers the WEXAS awards and encourages geographical research and exploration by granting approval and financial support to expeditions with significant scientific content. Some £45,000 is distributed by the society each year to around 50 expeditions. To be eligible expeditions should have strong links with host countries institutions and the involvement of nationals from the host country in research is vigorously encouraged.
